Annotated BibliographiesAnnotated Bibliography #1:
In the article “Psychological Interventions In Obsessive Compulsive Disorder”, the author explains Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD, and the psychological problems and altercations associated with the disorder. According to this article, OCD can be described as “the presence of obsessions such as repetitive thoughts, impulses or images, and compulsions such as ritualised repetitive behaviours or mental acts that aim to reduce anxiety and discomfort,” (pg 1). In addition to examining problems with this disorder, this source introduces types of treatment and care plans that are used to treat this disorder while also examining obsessions and compulsions brought on by this disorder. Overall, this article is useful to use in my capstone project because it describes a potential disorder that I may have to approach in my internship when working with school psychologists and it is related to the fields of psychology and psychiatry, which I have an interest in pursuing. This article relates to my potential research that I am conducting at my internship because I will be working with the school psychologists and I might be working with a child that was diagnosed with this disorder and it’s important that I know how to approach this problem. Therefore, I should try and be familiar with it. This source has also taught me some different ways to diagnose and treat this disorder that could be beneficial in my future professional career. This source has been helpful for me in the sense that I now know what to expect when I encounter this disorder. It’s important to know that OCD brings emotional and psychological stress and the disorder can be challenging to diagnose and it’s important to diagnose this disorder as soon as possible before the compulsions and obsessions associated with OCD become severe. It is also significant to understand how a person has the ability to live with this disorder. In addition, I can use this article in my research project to explain a more complex side of psychology. Although I am working with children, I could potentially encounter this disorder when working with the school psychologists. I can also use this in my research project when describing the various types of psychological treatment that can be used when treating numerous disorders. Lastly, this article is useful in my research project because I learned a new aspect of psychological disorders while gaining insight on types of treatment that could overall be helpful in the future. Annotated Bibliography #2: Barrett, Courtenay A., et al. "Training School Psychologists To Identify Specific Learning Disabilities: A Content Analysis Of Syllabi." School Psychology Review 44.3 (2015): 271-288. MasterFILE Elite. Web. 26 Jan. 2017. After reading this article, I have gained some insightful information regarding school psychology and its relationship to special education. This article focuses primarily on the roles of school psychologists and how they play an important role in special education. Most commonly discussed in this article is the idea of SLDs which are crucial in the world of special education. According to the U.S. Office of Education, “an SLD as a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations” which demonstrates the importance of this term in the training of school psychologists as it will be used constantly. SLDs have become controversial in many schools there are different tests and concepts that are used, such as RTIs. This article also speaks about the different ways school psychologists are trained and the various curriculums they are taught. As the article reaches the middle and end, the idea of SLDs changes to a more negative interpretation while discussing the many problems associated with it. In addition to the information stated in the first part of this article, the authors also go on to discuss the study they conducted which consisted of gathering syllabi from numerous universities and comparing the information from each of the courses. Lastly, the authors of this article talk about the results of the study as well as the analysis of the data and how it applies to the previous information stated. Overall, this article is about SLD training and the advantages and disadvantages associated with it as well as incorporating a study to explore this idea further. Once I read this article, I did find there are many important quotes that I could incorporate into my project and presentation. Some potential quotes include: “In fact, school psychologists are estimated to spend approximately half of their time in special education decision making (Castillo, Curtis, & Gelley, 2012).”, “To promote quality data-based decision making with students, school psychologists are trained in general assessment knowledge and skills, including (a) psychometrics, (b) gathering of data from a range of tests or other instruments from multiple sources (e.g., record review, interview, observation, testing), and (c) interpretation of results (American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, & National Council for Measurement in Education, 2014; National Association of School Psychologists [NASP], 2009).”, “Very little, if any, research on how school psychologists are trained to engage in SLD decision making exists. The majority of the literature on psychoeducational assessment training, broadly, has focused on the content of courses teaching individual cognitive assessment (e.g., Alfonso, Oakland, LaRocca, & Spanakos, 2000; Oakland & Zimmerman, 1986) or training the standardized administration and scoring of norm-referenced tests (e.g., Loe, Kadlubek, & Marks, 2007; McQueen, Meschino, Pike, & Poelstra, 1994).”, and “This study was the first of its kind to document school psychology training in SLD decision making. SLD decision making is a significant role for school psychologists and may affect the 2.4 million children currently receiving special education services under the category of SLDs.” This article is credible for several reasons. First, I found this article on Galileo, which is a reliable source where you can search for studies and scholarly articles. This shows that the article must be accurate and have proper information and this website also indicates the source is valid because it ends in “.edu”. Second, it was written by members of different universities that have credible reputations in the academic world. Third, this study and article is from the School Psychology Review, a journal that promotes intellectual studies and articles relating to research and training associated with psychology and education. In addition, this article is current and will be useful for the topic I am researching. There are no additional links that would provide further information but there are a list of references that could provide more potential information. All things considered, it is also important for the information gained from this article to be used for future reference. This article fits into my potential research because my research revolves around the concept of integrating psychology and education and the article explains this process while applying it to an area that school psychologists are closely tied with: special education. It helps me to answer my essential question in some ways and provides a different perspective of school psychologist’s roles in the education system. I find that this source to helpful for it helped me create part of an answer for my essential question and I can see more of what school psychologist’s do other than the stereotypical duties they have. I can use this article in my capstone project by applying it to the information I include in my project. I could also create a powerpoint slide to highlight the main points of the article and study and how it relates to my research. Although this article was very long, after reading the entirety of it, I was thoroughly pleased with the information I learned regarding school psychology and education. There were many points made throughout the article that I had no prior knowledge of and surprised me to be factual evidence. Overall, I find this article to be a significant addition to my research and my capstone project as it will provide more thorough and detailed information and it helps me to answer my essential question. Annotated Bibliography #3: Burrow-Sanchez, Jason, et al. “School Psychologists’ Perceived Competence and Training Needs for Student Substance Abuse.” Journal of School Health, vol. 79, no. 6, June 2009, pp. 269-276. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1111/j.1746-1561.2009.00409.x. In the article “School Psychologists’ Perceived Competence and Training Needs for Student Substance Abuse”, the authors discuss how school psychologists are very likely to provide mental health services in educational backgrounds but they have no prior training or experience to provide help with substance abuse issues. In today’s society, many high school students come into contact with harmful substances, mainly alcohol and marijuana. However, there are not many guidelines for school psychologists to follow in this area and many received limited training relating to this area. Additionally, this academic journal includes a study conducted by the authors that examines the ability of school psychologists to address substance abuse issues. The researchers sent 500 random high school psychologists a survey about training needs relating to substance abuse as well as a mailing packet containing an introductory letter, consent form, a return envelope, and a bag of tea. Then, a second mailing was sent one week later containing a postcard. Then, a third and final mailing was sent with another mailing packet to those who had not yet completed the survey. After receiving the information back from 210 of the school psychologists, the researchers analyzed the data using SPSS 15.0 and compared mean scores in certain categories. As a result, the researchers found that school psychologists feel they need more training in substance abuse areas, most importantly in screening and assessment. The researchers explained, “This study provides important findings related to the perceived competence and training needs of school psychologists working in high schools to address student substance abuse concerns, but more research is needed,”(Page 7) while analyzing the results of the study. Although the results allowed the researchers to come to a conclusion, more research should still be conducted and there are many factors that limited the results of the study, such as race and the non-respondents of the study. To support their results, the authors incorporated tables and diagrams of the results and also provided ways to integrate substance abuse training in a variety of ways. Overall, this article and study examines the idea that school psychologists have not received enough training related to substance abuse areas and has come to the conclusion that school psychologists need more training in these areas so they can provide these services efficiently and successfully. There are numerous quotes that I can put into my own words and use for information in the future. Some of the quotes include, “The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) states that, ‘‘School Psychologists are mental health professionals’’ and encourages providing mental health services to students in school settings,” and, “Students in high school typically report higher substance use levels than their middle school counterparts and indicate the use of a variety of substances,”. Other quotes I can use consist of, “At the very least, school psychologists should have some knowledge of substance abuse so as to be able to provide effective consultation and referrals for students and their parents. Unfortunately, reviews of the literature indicate that the level of training that school mental health personnel possess to effectively address student substance abuse concerns is limited—and practically nonexistent in the case of school psychologists,”, “The rank-ordered data of the most important areas for school psychologists to receive substance abuse–related training are presented in Figure 2. These data indicate that 47.6% of school psychologists identified screening or assessment as the most important substance abuse–related training area, followed by consultation (24.3%) and individual interventions (18%),”, and, “The training areas identified by school psychologists have important implications for school psychology preparation programs and in-service training. Specifically, graduate programs in school psychology could integrate substance abuse material in existing courses,”. These quotes I can summarize and put in my own words to help support my paper. This academic journal is found in Galileo’s database and also comes from the Journal of School Health by the American School Health Association. There is no direct URL from this source but the researchers are members of accredited universities which adds to the article’s reliability. Also, the researchers that conducted the study all have MEd’s, PhD’s, or MS’s which adds to the credibility of the study. The authors are unbiased as the article came from a prestigious health journal and well-known health association. This source is not out-of-date as it was written in 2009 so it still provides somewhat up-to-date data and information. There are no direct links referred to in the article or study but the authors included references from which they got some of their information which also appear to be credible and reliable. It does not appear to be in a collection of criticisms but it still remains a solid and reliable source because the information is well-documented and referenced. Additionally, the researchers found that their study is 98.8% reliable. Therefore, this source can be considered very credible and reliable due to numerous reasons. This article fits into my potential and current research because it relates to my essential question and I will use this information in my capstone project as another element of how school psychologists can implement psychology into an educational setting and I will also add it to my website along with my other annotated bibliographies. It adds more information to support my research and provides data in an unfamiliar area of school psychology. Additionally, this source was very helpful to me as it relates to my overall topic and can provide information to help me answer my guiding question. This study will add to my research regarding my essential question and I will be able to add my information to my project as a whole with this source. I will be able to add this research into my PowerPoint and the additional visual aids I will be using in my presentation. I will mainly paraphrase and summarize this information in my presentation so that it is a supporting element to my overall question. This study and article will allow me to incorporate new information into my capstone project while illustrating a new area of school psychology. It is an unusual aspect of school psychology so it will give me an advantage that not many members of the audience will see coming. Overall, this article will be useful in my future and current research and will benefit my project and presentation in a variety of ways. |
